Contemplative Photography

Photographing mindfully involves a meditative approach that ideally allows uncluttered "clear seeing" of things as they are here-now. Of course this doesn't happen every time, but when it does the resulting images reflect the sense of calm presence felt at the moment of image capture.

Asheville Area

Asheville is described as a "progressive" small city in the western North Carolina mountains, but mostly it's a state of mind. "Keep Asheville Weird" and "Cesspool of Sin" bumper stickers are popular, but keeping Asheville fun and beautiful is also a high priority.

North Carolina State Fairs

There is something about carnivals, the risk along with the adventure that makes for interesting photos.

Old Barns in Western North Carolina

Deteriorating with age, these old barns in the hills and hollers are rapidly disappearing, along with the culture that goes with them.

People and Culture

Much of my work deals with us - what we do, create, care about, daily life. This is a small sample.

Beaches and Water

There is high energy in the margins where land and water meet. Open yourself to them and see what happens.

Polaroid Transfers

Transfers involve either emulsion "lifts" (hot water technique) or pressing developing negatives onto a surface. They are one-of-a-kind originals.

Photo-Haiga

Haiga usually refers to haiku-type poetry embedded in a work of art, including photography. My poems are written in a modern American style which is more flexible in form.
